About Newfs

There's nothing cuter than a big, furry puppy and Newfoundland pups are certainly no exception. We think they're pretty irresistible, too.

BUT, it's all too easy to fall in love instantly and forget that looks aren't everything. Acquiring a pup or an adult dog carries with it the same responsibility as having a child would. Perhaps even more, since your dog will be with you for his entire life. You should never make your decision based on appearances rather than sound knowledge.

Any dog is a challenge. There's training to consider, feeding, grooming, housing, and health. Large dogs are more expensive to own than small ones. Health problems are certainly more costly for large breed dogs.

Newfs drool, shed profusely, need frequent grooming and exercise. They get BIG! Newfs are working dogs and need a job to do. They won't thrive on harsh punishment but they definitely need humane training from their owners. Newfs need a quality food to support good health. They need to live indoors and have access to a secure yard. Most of all, they need people in their lives. Make sure your entire family agrees before acquiring any dog.

Be certain that this is the breed for you and that you are ready to make a commitment for the life of the dog. If you're not absolutely positive you can live with or afford a Newf, then check out the many other breeds of dogs. The right one is waiting for you!
